How to Split a PDF by Section for Easier Sharing
A 90-page handbook does not need to go to everyone whole. The finance chapter goes to finance, the onboarding module to new hires, the appendix to no one. Splitting by section means each person gets a small, relevant file.
Method 1: A browser-based tool (fastest, nothing leaves your device)
Your browser can do this entirely in JavaScript — the file is read into your device's memory and the result is written back locally, with no upload in between.
- Open the Split PDF tool in your browser. No install required.
- Drag the PDF onto the page; it stays on your device.
- Enter the page ranges that match your sections, such as 1-12, 13-40, 41-90.
- Click Split. Each section downloads as its own file, built locally.
Best for: training manuals, reports and proposals where different readers need different parts.
Trade-off: you need a connection to load the page once; afterwards it runs offline.
Method 2: Tools already on your computer
Preview on macOS can export a page range after deleting the rest, repeated per section. Windows has no native split without a print workaround, which re-renders pages.
Method 3: Desktop PDF software
Desktop editors split by range, bookmark or outline with preview thumbnails — helpful for very large documents. They are a paid subscription for occasional use.
Why keep it on your device?
Speed
Local tools skip the upload and download round-trip, so the job finishes as fast as your device can write the result. Server tools add transfer time on both ends.
Privacy
When the document never leaves your machine, there is no copy sitting on someone else's server afterwards — which is what matters for contracts, statements and ID scans.
Cost
Browser tools and the software already on your OS are free. Paid desktop suites earn their price only when you need capabilities beyond the basics, such as OCR.
Convenience
For an occasional task a bookmarked browser tool is hard to beat: no install, no login, and it works on a phone when someone emails you files while you are out.
Common questions
Can I share just one section without the rest?
Yes. Split out the pages you need and send only that file; the original never has to leave your device.
Does splitting change the content?
No. The chosen pages are copied into a new file without re-encoding, so formatting and text are preserved.
Can I split by chapter if there are no bookmarks?
Use page numbers. If you are unsure where a chapter starts, the Rotate PDF preview or a quick scroll helps you find the boundaries.
Is this free?
Browser splitters and Preview are free. Paid desktop software only adds value when you need heavy batch or OCR work.
Can I split a scanned PDF by section?
Yes. Scanned pages split like any others; each section remains a proper PDF.
