How to Redact a PDF Without Uploading It
Redacting is about hiding sensitive content — so the one thing you must not do is send that content to a server first. If a PDF holds an ID, a bank statement or a contract, keep it on your device and work locally.
Why redaction and "upload" don't mix
Think about the order of operations. An upload-based redaction site receives your whole document — ID numbers, account details, signatures, the lot — before it ever blacks anything out. By the time you've "redacted" it, the sensitive content has already travelled to a third party's storage. For a document you're redacting precisely because it's confidential, that defeats the point.
Method 1 — Remove the sensitive pages entirely (local)
If you only need to share part of a document, the cleanest fix is to extract just the pages you're allowed to share. The pages you keep never leave your device, and the sensitive ones are simply never included.
- Open the Split PDF tool.

- Split and download only the safe pages.
This sidesteps redaction entirely: there's nothing sensitive left in the file you share.
Method 2 — Black out before sharing (local)
If you must keep everything in one file, black out the content in a trusted local reader or editor first, then share. The key is that the blacking-out step also happens locally — not on an upload-based "redact" site. - Don't assume "encrypted in transit" is enough. Encryption protects the transfer, not the copy that lands on the server afterwards.
